Vikings stun road-weary Trojans

The Trojans suffered their first loss of the season Saturday in a Feb. 8 makeup game at Lindsborg against Smoky Valley, 64-54.

Lindsborg has been a tough place for Hillsboro to play in the past, and Saturday was no different with the Trojans having to play less than 12 hours after defeating Ellinwood the night before, 57-39.

Hillsboro (18-1) has struggled the last several games in the field and it bit against Vikings, who limited the Trojans to 38 percent overall and 4-of-22 from outside.

Kyle Hubele burned the Trojans for a game-high 20 points with six coming in a 16-16 first quarter.

With the aid of five points from Christians and four from Hubele, the Vikings were able to grab a 29-28 lead at halftime.

Dan Deckert scored a team-high 15 points and eight rebounds for the Trojans, Lucas Hamm supplied 11, and Kyle Kroeker, 10.

Hillsboro trailed heading into the fourth quarter, 43-40.

Nine points from Deckert in the fourth quarter kept the game from really coming unraveled on Hillsboro.

His three barely 3:00 into the fourth quarter cut Smoky Valley's lead to 48-47, but the Trojans couldn't get much to fall after that.

The Vikings used a 10-0 run and 21-14 fourth quarter to hand fatigued Hillsboro its first loss of the season.

The only place the Trojans could get anything to fall was at the foul line, hitting 8-of-9 for 89 percent.

Hillsboro closed out the regular season Tuesday night at home against struggling Hoisington.

The top-seeded Trojans will host the Sterling Black Bears Feb. 28 in the first round of the Lyons sub-state.

The semifinals and final game will then move to Lyons, who also has the Lions, Halstead, Hesston, Marion, Ellsworth, and Medicine Lodge in attendance.
