Walkway to be replaced

Hillsboro Senior Center will replace a 43x21-foot section of concrete sidewalk.

The request was approved at a Senior Citizens of Marion County, Inc., meeting Aug. 20.

The area is pitted and chipped, causing water to collect and freeze in the winter.

Hein Construction had the lowest bid of $2,516 for the project. A request of $1,010 was approved to be paid with county mill levy funds.

Additional funds will be obtained from donations and fund-raisers.

In other business:

— The certified transit district of which Marion County is a member, will be making changes in applying for and obtaining funds for vehicles.

Currently, Marion County Department for Elderly receives vans for public transportation through the program. Applications are reviewed and approved by other entities within the district. Kansas Department of Transportation has adopted new criteria where entities statewide will rank and approve applications.

County elderly department director Noreen Weems said the changes concern her.

Other changes require vehicles to have a minimum of 80,000 miles the first year and 65,000 miles the second year before being considered for replacement.

Representation will be required at district meetings from all entities who receive funding through the KDOT program. Ridership policies and transportation guidelines are required by KDOT. Marion County has those policies and guidelines in place.

— The board reimbursed Ramona Senior Center $67 for repairs to the men's bathroom. A water leak caused some floor damage and required immediate repair.

— Goessel AGAPE Senior Center/Nutrition Site will host the 44th annual meeting Oct. 14. Tickets will cost $3.75 and be on sale starting Sept. 17.

— The North Central-Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging senior fair will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 21 at Salina Bicentennial Center.

— Central Home Care & Hospice will celebrate 25 years of service to Marion County Sept. 24. Open house and barbecue will be from 5 to 8 p.m.

Plett, Farrar promoted

Northview Developmental Service, Inc., officials announce staff changes for 2004.

Bev Plett, who has been employed by Northview for eight and half years, was promoted to residential services coordinator. Plett worked as a direct staff person until 2002 when she was promoted to residential team manager. She is a graduate of Minnot State University and taught elementary school for 10 years. Plett is a resident of Hillsboro.

William Farrar was promoted to residential team manager in Hillsboro. Farrar previously had worked in both residential and day activities services for two years.

He and his wife Ellen live in Hillsboro.
