Warriors split games this past weeor groups

Peabody-Burns High School boys' basketball team fell Feb. 14 in overtime to Remington, and claimed a homecoming victory Friday against Bennington. The regular season ended Tuesday with a senior-night game against Berean Academy.

Four Warriors put up points against a strong defensive Remington attack in the first quarter. Derek Benson scored six, Derrick Simmonds three, and Nathan Bishop and Todd Woodruff each had two as PBHS trailed at the end of one, 19-13.

The Warrior offense came within four early in the second, but the Broncos were able to build a 10-point lead with less than two minutes to play.

Jason Carroll sank two free throws to cut the Bronco lead to eight, and nailed a three at the buzzer from behind half court to cut the lead to 34-29 at halftime.

Carroll and Simmonds each had seven in the period and Micah Hilliard added a basket.

The Warrior defense went to work in the third and held the Broncos to nine points. The Warrior offense was paced by Benson and Simmonds with five points each.

Duane Unruh had a basket, and a Hilliard hook shot tied the game at 43 with one minute left in the period. Carroll then added a layup at the buzzer as PBHS had its first lead, 45-43 heading into the fourth quarter.

Benson and Hilliard had four points each in the fourth period and the Warriors were down by six with two minutes left in the game.

Simmonds hit two three-pointers to knot the game at 59. The Warrior defense held the Broncos for the remainder of the quarter as the teams headed to overtime.

Benson did all he could with six points in the overtime period, but Remington scored 15 points, nine from the foul line, and defeated the Warriors, 74-65.

Bennington

The Warriors offense stayed even with Bennington Friday through the first quarter of play.

Woodruff sank a three at the buzzer as PBHS trailed just 17-16 after one.

Simmonds led the offense with seven points, Bishop had four, Woodruff had three, and Hilliard added two points.

PBHS and the Bulldogs battled for the lead throughout the second period. A big Bennington inside defense fired up the Warrior perimeter offense. Simmonds had nine points, Hilliard and Cody Weerts each had two points, and Benson added two free throws. Woodruff again nailed a three at the buzzer, and PBHS led 34-32 at halftime.

The Warrior defense held the Bulldogs to 11 in the third quarter, while the Warrior offense put up 17. Simmonds had five points, Benson and Unruh each had four, and Bishop and Hilliard each had two points, as PBHS led 51-43 after three.

Play from both teams intensified in the fourth. Bennington outscored PBHS 13-8.

Simmonds and Benson each had four points, as the Warriors held on for a 59-56 victory.
