Warriors take third in Great Eight tournament

Peabody-Burns High School boys' basketball team finished third this past week in the Great Eight tournament.
The Warriors beat Norwich, 87-42, lost to Goessel, 76-53, and beat Berean, 37-33.
At Norwich, the Warriors took a big lead in the first. Jason Carroll paced the team with 12 points. Robert Rossberg added five points, and Derrick Simmonds had a three-pointer.
Derek Benson, Duane Unruh, and Micah Hilliard each had a basket, to give PBHS a 26-8 lead.
The Warriors kept up the scoring in the second with Carroll and Simmonds scoring five each. Cody Weerts had four points, while Benson, Unruh, and Trevor Hamm each had two points.
Leading 46-21 at the start of the third quarter, PBJH turned it up more in the second half. Nathan Bishop added his name to the scoring list with 10 points.
After holding Norwich to 21 second half points, the Warriors came away with the lopsided victory.
In the second half Hilliard had six points, Cole Welsh and Derek Benson five, Hamm and Adam Benson four, Todd Woodruff three, and Simmonds and Aaron Burnett two.
In the second round of play, Rossberg had the only two Warrior points in the first quarter against the Bluebirds, as PBJH trailed Goessel, 15-2.
Benson would score 10 of the Warriors' 20 points in the second quarter, but PBHS still trailed 36-20 at the half.
Simmonds had five points in the quarter, Ryan Wiebe two, and Weerts one.
The Bluebird assault continued in the second half. While the Warriors scored 33 points, they couldn't close the gap and fell by 23.
Second half scoring was led by Benson with 12. Hilliard and Rossberg had six each, Simmonds three, and Carroll, Unruh, and Bishop each had two.
Round three with Berean was an even contest in the first quarter. Benson scored six to lead PBHS, and Simmonds and Rossberg had two each, as the Warriors led 10-8.
Berean exploded in the second quarter with 17 points. The Warriors had just five and trailed by 10 at the half.
PBHS had strong defense in the second half and found the hoop for 22 points and held Berean to just eight.
Benson had nine in the second half and Unruh added seven. Hamm, Simmonds, and Rossberg had two each.
