Warriors win two

Peabody-Burns High School boys' basketball team earned two league victories this past week.
The Warriors defeated Sedgwick Dec. 13 51-49, and also beat Little River Friday, 61-45. The team is now 5-1 and will be back in action Jan. 3 at Goessel.
Momentum was key in the Sedgwick game. The Cardinals claimed the first quarter, leading 17-8.
Duane Unruh, Cole Welsh, Jason Carroll, and Derek Benson had two points each.
Playing from behind, PBHS defense held the Cardinals to seven, while the offense scored 15. The Warriors were still down at the half, 24-23. Benson scored six points, Unruh four, Derrick Simmonds three, and Robert Rossberg two.
PBHS gained momentum and built a six-point lead in the third. Benson scored seven Unruh had four, and Carroll, Nathan Bishop, and Micah Hilliard had two each. Swarming Warrior defense held the Cardinals to 10 points.
Both teams played physical in the fourth quarter. Sedgwick took the lead on a three-pointer with less than one minute to play. The PBHS offense took the lead, 50-49, with 30 seconds to play on a basket from Hilliard.
Hilliard came up big again, denying a Cardinal basket with 10 seconds to play in the game. He secured Warriors' possession and called time out with four seconds on the clock.
A Cardinal foul put Carroll on the line to shoot two. He made good on one and the Warriors took the game by two points.
Bishop and Hilliard had four points each in the fourth. Rossberg added two and Carroll had one free throw.

Little River
PBHS jumped out to a big lead early in the Friday contest with Little River.
Benson led the Warriors with 10 points, Simmonds had eight, and Carroll six in the first quarter, as PBHS led 24-8 at the end of the quarter.
The Warrior offense slowed in the second, scoring nine points. Benson had two baskets, Cody Weerts two points, and Welsh two points.
Little River scored 12 points, and trailed PBHS 33-20 at the half.
The Warriors controlled the game throughout the second half. Good defensive pressure created scoring opportunities for PBHS.
Carroll had seven in the half, while Simmonds added six. Bishop scored five, Derek Benson four, and Unruh, Welsh, and Adam Benson had two points each.
