Riding a wave of spikes, kills and aces from previous matches, the Goessel volleyball team still had a difficult Little River team to cross on Tuesday.

Little River, one of the toughest 1A teams in the state, was in town along with Sedgwick. Results were not available before press time.

"Little River is a perennial power in the Heart of America League," said Coach Crysta Guhr.

Goessel was hoping to figure out a defense that will work against Little River, since the two teams will meet again later in the season and could possibly meet in post-season play.

On Oct. 3, the Bluebirds close out league play against Canton-Galva, Bennington and Hutchinson Trinity.

The Bluebirds need to keep winning in order to get a good seed in the Heart of America League Tournament on Oct. 14.

This past Tuesday, the Bluebirds defeated Berean 25-16, 25-19 and defeated Peabody-Burns 25-13, 25-15. Goessel served 91 percent connected on 18 aces for the night.

Senior Kory Hiebert had 16 kills and 15 downed blocks while serving 100 percent. Senior Courtney Berkholz had five aces in the short two-game matches.

Before Tuesday's matches, Goessel had a record of 14-5 overall and 4-2 in league play.
