Weather delays closure of county landfill

Marion County Commission learned Monday that wet weather has caused a delay in closing the former county landfill.

Dirt work was to begin by a contractor June 27. The commission approved the delay.

However, David Brazil, county sanitarian, who is overseeing the project, said the contractor needed to begin July 5, regardless of the weather.

The commission approved the services of Geo-Technical Services for analyzing the required soil samples. Gas and water samples are required to be analyzed.

The first soil samples need to be obtained 10 feet deep in several areas. Brazil suggested the county road and bridge department provide a back-hoe and personnel for the collection. Otherwise, the expense could cost the county $800 to $1,000. He was instructed to contact the road department and schedule the operation.

The two samples will cost the county $280 each.
