What will your impact be?

The Hillsboro Community Foundation will host a celebration banquet at 6:30 p.m. Monday to announce the formation of the Hillsboro Area Impact Fund.

The movers and shakers in our community will be there, but even if you don't consider yourself to be a mover or a shaker, we encourage you to make a reservation to attend.

Hillsboro Community Foundation is a tax-exempt public charity able to receive gifts, bequests, and government tax credits for the purpose of providing resources to meet current and future charitable needs in Hillsboro and neighboring communities.

The Impact Fund is the name the foundation has given to a new endowment that will enhance the quality of life in Hillsboro for years to come.

And that's where we come in.

Because no matter what our bank account or portfolio may say, we all have the potential to make a positive impact on the community in which we live.

In his book, Giving It Away: In Praise of Philanthropy, author Denis Tracey, reminds us of some basic truths about philanthropy:

— Philanthropy is not, and should not be, the sole preserve of the rich.

— Philanthropy doesn't necessarily involve money; you can also give time, knowledge, skill, and passion.

— Philanthropy can be intensely satisfying; and the satisfaction tends to increase the more time, knowledge, skill and passion — and money — you invest.

— Philanthropy and social investment is a skill. The more you develop it, the more effective your giving becomes.

If you've never thought of yourself as a philanthropist before, we encourage you to begin. When everyone brings what they have to give, we all grow richer.

The formation of the Area Impact Fund affords an opportunity for all of us to consider how we want to be remembered in this community, and to ask ourselves, "What will my impact be?"
