Wichita Mayor Bob Knight to speak at leadership ceremony

Wichita Mayor Bob Knight will be the keynote speaker Monday night at a ceremony honoring this year's graduates of Leadership Marion County.

The ceremony is set for Monday, Aug. 26, at 6:30 p.m. in the activity center of Parkview Mennonite Brethren Church.

Eight county residents participated in this year's leadership class. They are: Jessica Laurin, DVM, Marion; Jared Jost and Steve Garrett, Hillsboro; Racquel Thiesen, Goessel; Kay Geiman, Lehigh; Monica Leihy, Tampa; Jane Pigorsch, Lincolnville; and Joanna Brazil, Peabody.

Leadership Marion County was founded as a part of the Marion County Economic Development Council. The program exposes present and future county leaders to various aspects of Kansas life, from local agriculture and industry to state government.

The learning experiences encompass eight day-long sessions.

For the final session, held Aug. 1, the class of 2002 and board met at the Peabody Public Library. The morning session featured a presentation by Steve Wycoff from the Educational Services and Staff Development Association of Central Kansas, or ESSDACK.

"Mr. Wycoff left the class with vital information that will be helpful the rest of their lifetimes," said board member Becky Nuss.

The afternoon session included a presentation by Jim Baker of Baker Brothers Printing Co.

Local Hillsboroans Baker and Carol Wiebe of the Hillsboro Development Corporation as well as Western Associates' Dave Crofoot were instrumental in getting Leadership Marion County started, said board member Cari Garbo.

Activities begin Monday night at 6:30 p.m. with a reception. Dinner starts at 7 p.m. and costs $10 per person.

Reservations must be made in advance by contacting Becky Nuss, 947-2000, or Garbo, 947-2321 or 947-3795.

The public is invited.
