Winter honored by dairy farming organization
Warren Winter of rural Hillsboro was named the 2003 Kansas Dairy leader at the ninth Kansas Dairy Association annual meeting on Feb 22. Winter received a plaque at the meeting. His picture and a plaque will hang in Kansas State University Call Hall, where the diary science department is located.
This award began in 1952 and only 27 dairy producers have received it.
Winter's family farm, Rock Home Holsteins, was recognized for the herds' dairy type and milk production. They not only milk cattle, they also sell cattle, embryos, and young stock from deep cow families.
In 2000, his farm received the Kansas Distinguished Dairy Award.
Winter is president of the Kansas Dairy Association and was instrumental in establishing the Kansas Dairy Commission in 1995. He serves on the commission board of directors. He has also represented the association in Washington, D.C., on important dairy legislation.
Winter has served as president of the Kansas Holsteins Association and a delegate to the National Holstein Associations' National Convention.
He also served many years as a 4-H leader and was county fair supervisor. His family has hosted the International Dairy Farm Trainees from Peru, Nicaragua and Hungary.
He has served on many boards and councils associated with diary products.
Winter graduated from Emporia State University with a business education and accounting degree and taught in Lyons for four years.
He and his wife Jean have three children, Dalina, a teacher in new Danville, Pa.: Kevin who is a partner at the dairy; and Krista, a senior majoring in music at Eastern University in St. David's, Pa.
