Without warning
You've hurt yourself. You have a Band-Aid on your arm. But when you try to pull it off, it hurts like the dickens.
Do it quick, people say. It'll hurt less.
But match this lesson up to the city budget, and it definitely does not apply.
For the 2003 fiscal year budget, the City of Hillsboro has surreptitiously slashed funding to the economic development arm of the city.
Now a slight decrease we might be able to understand. Times are tough; money is tight.
But to go from a nearly $11,000 budget to zero? Nothing? Nada?
That's harsh. And it came without warning.
Economic development is something we all want. We want business growth in town. We want the Hillsboro Development Commission, the Chamber of Commerce, the visitor's bureau to keep doing their jobs of bringing people and businesses to Hillsboro.
But they can't do it without money.
True, they're still receiving funding from other city sources. But to lose ten grand all at once is quite a shock.
The HDC deserves better.
