Late in her life, actress Ethel Barrymore invited a group of friends to celebrate her birthday. "Will there be a birthday cake?" one friend asked.

"Of course," she replied, "there will be plenty of cake for everyone."

"And candles?" another friend asked.

"No," replied Barrymore, "it will be a birthday party, not a torch light procession."
