Woods Fully Committed to Tabor Theatre one-man show

Michael Woods, Wichita, soon will appear in a comedic one-man show at Tabor College.

"Fully Committed" will be performed at 7: 30 p.m. Feb. 1, 2, and 4 in the Theatre Lab, located in the lower level of the H.W. Lohrenz Building.

The show follows a day in the life of Sam, an out-of-work actor who co-manages the reservation line for a top New York restaurant. Left to fend for himself, he is bombarded on the phone and intercom by ego-driven staff and clients, rich, powerful or otherwise, who demand table reservations despite the restaurant being booked up — - or fully committed.

Woods will portray Sam as well as 35 other entertaining characters.

After Judy Harder, associate professor of communications and drama, showed him the script for the first time last year, Woods remembers thinking "it was so entertaining and funny that it would be such a marvel to see it. One guy playing 35 characters! Then one day we both started contemplating if we could do it ourselves. The more we thought about it, the more we thought we could."

A regular contributor to Tabor theatre the past four years, Woods finds himself intrigued by its paradox.

"Theatre is not real," he said, "yet it shows us the truth. Honesty on stage, honesty in comedy and tragedy, and honesty with yourself. To be truly yourself, and investing all that you are into a role, and then applying that same effort in your own life. So many times in theatre, and in life, we try to put a face on in an attempt to please or captivate audiences, but what really connects the audience with the truth is when they witness someone who is being true to who they are. Theatre has inspired me to pursue the dreams of my heart because, in doing that, I become true to who I really am and true to God."

While this will not be Woods' last show at Tabor, he said it is his way of paying Tabor homage for all that it has done for him.

"In essence, it is my farewell and thank you to Tabor," he said.

Tickets for "Fully Committed" are available by calling the Student Development Office at 620-947-3121 ext. 1033. General admission and student tickets may be purchased for $5 and $2.50 respectively.
