Wrestlers advance to MCAA finals
Cress, Yoder, Kaiser place second at league

With seven teams competing at the MCAA League wrestling tournament held Feb. 14 at Haven, the Hillsboro Trojans came in fifth place.
Lyons won the league tournament followed by Halstead placing second, and Marion placing third, to round out the top three.
"Technically we wrestled pretty well," coach Scott O'Hare said, "But mentally we were not sharp."
"We lost some close matches, and we lost to some kids we've beaten in the past," O'Hare said.
Advancing to the league championship rounds in their respective weight classes were Eric Cress (125), Daniel Yoder (145), and Ryan Kaiser (152), all three wrestlers placed second.
Yoder ended the day with a 2-1 record, falling 4-0, to Adkins of Halstead in the championship finals.
Cress and Kaiser ended their day with a 1-1 record each. Cress lost to Kroetsch of Lyons, 6-3, in the finals and Kaiser lost, 21-6, to Barger of Halstead.
Andrew Bina (140), Ricky Johnson (112), and Daniel Bookless (103) all took third at the league meet.
Bina had a 3-1 record, Johnson, a 2-1 record, and Bookless, a 1-1 record.
Kurtis Shaw (275) and Caleb Barkman (189), both placed fourth, ending the day with a 1-2 and 0-2 record, respectively.
Jesse Boucher (119), Darcy Unrau (130), Adam Dirks (160), Tim Glahn (171), all had 0-2 records for the day and did not place.
"I started thinking after the tournament and realized that we had all of our wrestlers place at league, except Tim, who just come back from knee surgery, and our freshmen," O'Hare said.
"This experience at league for the juniors and sophomores who all placed will pay off down the road," he said.
The team will compete Saturday at regionals at Hesston. There will be 20 schools represented at regionals. The top four in each weight class will advance to state which will be held Feb. 27-28 at Fort Hays State University in Hays.
O'Hare looks to have three to five of his wrestlers have a "legitimate shot" of coming out of regionals and heading to state.
"But we have some on our team who could, if they wrestle well, bump somebody out," he said. "Anything can happen both ways — if you're favored to make state and someone bumps you out — anything can happen."
