Wrestlers compete at Halstead tournament

Staff writer

With only five varsity wrestlers competing Friday and Saturday at the Halstead Wrestling Tournament, Hillsboro managed to score 33 team points and place 15 out of the 20 teams competing.

Douglass won the tournament scoring 168 points followed by Lincoln with 160, El Dorado with 149.5, and Halstead with 135 to round out the top four.

Senior Daniel Yoder (145), Hillsboro's hopeful to place in the top four of his weight class, became sick and could not wrestle the rest of the tournament. Yoder pinned his first opponent from Douglass 1:41 in the first period.

"With Danny sick on Saturday, that left me with four sophomores to finish out the tournament," head coach Scott O'Hare said.

Sophomores, Andrew Bina (140) and Kurtis Shaw (275) were the only Trojans who placed at the tournament. Both wrestlers won sixth place, ending the day with a 3-3 record each.

"I was pleased that Andrew and Kurtis were in the medal rounds," O'Hare said. "I was glad for them as sophomores to medal in this tournament which is very competitive."

Others competing were Ricky Johnson (112) and Eric Cress (125). Both ended the tournament with a 2-2 record.

"Both of them were in close matches and one match from placing at the tournament," O'Hare said.

"Overall, I was please the boys came back to win on Saturday, after losing their matches on Friday," he said. "Placing 15th as a team, with only four wrestlers, was not bad."

The Trojans will host a double dual with Lyons and Lincoln today at 5:30 p.m. The varsity wrestlers will compete at the Eureka Tournament on Saturday at Eureka. Matches begin at 9 a.m.
