Wrestlers place second at league tournament

Staff writer

The Hillsboro High School wrestling team had a tournament in Salina Feb. 5 and faced the MCAA league tournament last Saturday in Hoisington.

Results from the Salina dual tournament were disappointing, according to HHS head wrestling coach, Scott O'Hare. Hillsboro lost to Remington 26 to 40, beat Marion 38 to 31, and St. Johns 61 to four, and lost to SE Saline 18 to 57.

"This was not quite the way we wanted to finish out our dual season," said O'Hare. "We had high hopes of going into this tournament with an opportunity to compete and win it. We just didn't match up with them very well."

At the MCAA League Tournament last Saturday, the Trojans finished second as a team, and placed nine of the 12 wrestlers in the top four.

"This was probably as tough as the team tournament has ever been," said O'Hare. "I was very pleased to finish second as a team."

According to O'Hare, the addition of Marion, Smoky Valley, and Hoisington added a lot of depth to the tournament.

"I knew going in that Hoisington would be the team to beat, and that proved to be the case. They simply had too much fire power," said O'Hare. "By putting six guys into the championship finals, they really ran away with it. We were able to hang in there with only three in the championship finals because the guys did a real nice job wrestling through the consolation side."

Although O'Hare was disappointed that there weren't any individual champions, he says he was pleased with how the team persevered.

"This group has really begun to understand that every team point is critical."

The Trojans face their regional tournament this Friday and Saturday, and hopefully will go on to the state tournament Feb. 25 and 26.
