Wrestlers split dual, competes in Hesston

Staff writer

The Hillsboro High School wrestlers held out for a split at their dual last Thursday in Marion. The Trojans beat the Marion Warriors 45-30 and lost against the Halstead Dragons 33-40.

"For the first time out I felt we wrestled pretty well," said coach Scott O'Hare. "We wrestled hard. From top to bottom, we wrestled hard."

O'Hare said the team made the kind of technical mistakes that he expected the first time out.

"The loss against Halstead was obviously disappointing, but we learned how important every match is," said O'Hare.

On Saturday, seven members of the varsity wrestling team traveled to Hesston to compete in the Hesston Invitational Tournament and placed third.

O'Hare was happy with the effort at the tournament in Hesston.

"To be within only nine points of second place with only seven guys was very pleasing," said O'Hare.

Five of the seven varsity wrestlers finished in the top three at the tournament.

Kurtis Shaw (275) took his first championship finish in a tournament finishing 3-0 in first place.

Andrew Bina (152) and Matt Brown (145) both placed third.

O'Hare felt that overall the team put forth a super effort in a tournament where there was a big mix of teams including squads from 2A, 3A, 4A, and some 5A junior varsity squads.

The team's next match will be today (Thursday) in Lindsborg against Hesston and Smoky Valley.

Hillsboro will host a junior varsity tournament at 9 a.m. Saturday in Hillsboro at the Brown gymnasium. Between 15-20 squads will participate, and O'Hare expects between 200-250 wrestlers.
