The Hillsboro High School wrestling team accomplished another season fete this past weekend — winning the dual tournament last Saturday at Southeast of Saline. This is the third time the Trojans have taken first at the SES tournament.
Hillsboro had a 4-0 record, for the day, sealing the first-place finish. Marion placed second with a 3-1 record; Southeast of Saline placed third with a 2-2 record; Remington fourth with a 1-3 record; and St. John's Military fifth with a 0-4 record.
"The guys really wrestled well up at Southeast of Saline," said Head Coach Corey Burton. "They were very aggressive — something we've been working on to get prepared for regionals," he said.
"We wanted them to get on a roll, and they did just that," Burton said. "We're looking pretty good as a team right now and wrestling well which we wanted to do going into regionals."
According to Burton, the highlight of the tournament was the match between junior James Bina and Tyler Coleman of Remington. Bina had lost twice to Coleman in matches earlier in the season.
Bina managed to defeat Coleman 9-7.
"He (Coleman) will be James' biggest competition at regionals," Burton said. "Beating him at the tournament should give James confidence that he can do it again."
Up next for the Trojans will be the Mid-Central Activities Association league meet on Saturday. The Trojans will host the meet which starts at 10 a.m.
The league tournament is a round-robin tournament and will include teams from Halstead, Haven, Hesston, Hillsboro, Lyons, and Nickerson.
Hillsboro won the MCAA league title in 1999 and 2001.
"We sure hope to defend that title again this year," Burton said.
"We have four wrestlers that this will be their last appearance before a hometown crowd," he said. "They are Ronnie Davis, Carson Greenhaw, Wade Sorensen, and Bri Ratzlaff. Each of those guys has a 20-plus winning record."
"We hope to represent the team, school, and community in a good way," Burton said. "And we hope the fans will come out and watch us do that."
After the league meet, the team will travel on Feb. 15-16 to Garden Plains for regionals.
