Wrestlers take home win from double dual
Staff writer
The Hillsboro High School Trojan wrestlers came home with a split at the Marion double dual wrestling meet held last Thursday. Hillsboro defeated Hesston 44-22 but lost to Chase County 48-19.
"It was a nice league win for us," coach Corey Burton said. "We are now 3-0 for a league record."
"So, right now, everyone (teams) is at pretty much the same level in the hunt for the league title," he said.
In the Hesston match the Trojans didn't know what to expect at the 275-pound weight class level. Kurtis Shaw, a freshman, went up against Matt Koehn, a senior and a first year wrestler.
"It was kind of a surprise for us," Burton said. "Kurtis came through and picked up a fall for us."
In the Chase County match, Burton said he knew that they had too many weight classes open to win the dual. The coaches opted not to let senior James Bina compete.
"Everyone on the team needs to hold out on one match, so we decided to have James forfeit in this match," Burton said.
"He had injured his toe in the Hesston tournament, so we didn't want to aggravate it any more than we had too. Besides, we knew the dual was out of reach for us," he said.
The team record is now 4-2.
The team will host its first junior varsity tournament on Jan. 4.
Burton encourages the fans to come out and watch some good matches.
The varsity will resume competing on Jan. 9 at home against Minneapolis and Haven. The meet begins at 5:30 p.m.
