Yoder places second at Herington

HHS splits at Haven dual meet

The Hillsboro High School varsity wrestlers competed at the Herington Tournament held Saturday at Herington.

Only two Trojans were able to make the finals and receive medals.

According to head coach Scott O'Hare, two varsity wrestlers did not compete because of injuries.

Tim Glahn has been hampered by a knee injury as well as Ryan Janzen who has been hampered by a shoulder injury.

"Tim will have surgery on his knee," O'Hare said. "Depending upon the scope findings, he will not be able to wrestle until mid or late February."

As with the case of Janzen, O'Hare said he will also have to rest and will probably not be back until mid February.

Without a full squad, O'Hare said it was hard to compete team-wise at Herington.

Senior Daniel Yoder (145) received a second place medal ending the day with a 2-1 record. Yoder pinned his first opponent from Wamego in the first period, 1:42 and his second from Onaga in the second period, 2:33 but lost his final match to Anderes of Chapman, 6-1.

"Danny had two good matches going into the finals," O'Hare said.

The second Trojan to place was Kurtis Shaw (275). Shaw placed fourth with a 2-2 record. Shaw was pinned in his first match, but came back to pin his second opponent in the second period, 1:32. Shaw went on to win his third match 5-3, but lost the final match when he was pinned by Niehues of Onaga.

"Kurtis placed fourth at the tournament, and as a sophomore to place at this tournament is good," he said.

The team competed Jan. 8 at a double dual against Minneapolis and Haven at Haven.

Hillsboro lost to Minneapolis 55-21, but won the match against Haven, 45-35.

"I was a little disappointed of how we wrestled against Minneapolis," O'Hare said. "It looked as though we hesitated and lacked confidence in what to do, so we weren't able to make up for our mistakes."

Yoder pinned his opponents in both matches.

Eric Cress, Ryan Janzen, and Jesse Boucher, all pinned their Haven opponents.

"Against Haven we looked a little more confident and aggressive, which helped us overcome our mistakes," O'Hare said.

The varsity team will compete Friday and Saturday at Halstead Tournament. Matches begin at 4 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. on Saturday.

The junior varsity wrestlers will compete Friday at the Abilene tournament in Abilene. Matches begin at 4:30 p.m.
