Yoders lead Hillsboro cross country team to win

The 2003 cross country season got off to a good start Sept. 4 as the Hillsboro High School teams competed at Smoky Valley.

Still on the rampage for capturing the Trojans' first ever state title, the boys' team started what they hope is a record-breaking season, winning the meet.

With much of the boys' success riding on the shoulders of senior twins Aaron and Daniel Yoder, the duo finished first and second, respectively.

The boys edged out league-rival Hesston by a comfortable 16-37 margin.

Aaron finished the race in meet-best time of 17:22 with Daniel hot on his tail, coming in 16/100 of a second slower.

Fresh off a strong sophomore season that included running at the state meet, Kody Borg finished sixth with a time of 18:24.

Sean Leihy finished third in the freshman and sophomore divisionwith a time of 19:10, while teammate Nate Holmes finished fourth with a time of 19:24.

For the first time in a while, the Trojans will field a girls' team.

But with two runners injured, the Trojans didn't have enough competitors to earn a team score.

"The girls made a good start to their year," head coach Stuart Holmes said. "Hopefully, all six will be healthy by next week at Hesston."

Sara Hamm and Melissa Hiebert were sidelined with injuries.

"All the runners competed well and should feel good about the way they ran this first meet," said Stuart Holmes. "Especially considering that for about half of our runners, this was their first cross country race ever.

"I was pleased with the results. The summer running that a number of the athletes did really showed.

The Trojans compete in Hesston today with race time scheduled for 4 p.m.
