Zebra mussels not found in Marion Reservoir
After the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks confirmed that zebra mussels had been found at El Dorado Reservoir, officials at Marion Reservoir sprung into action.
Officials have been searching for evidence of the mussel species and have since determined there are no signs zebra mussels have invaded the waters at the Marion Reservoir.
Maintenance inspector Mike Knaak said despite the recent discovery of zebra mussels at El Dorado Reservoir, he and his colleagues have yet to find any at the reservoir.
"We've been walking up and down the face of the dam," Knaak said. "We've turned over a bunch of rocks, and we haven't found any indication that we have them."
Zebra mussels typically become severe menaces in reservoirs. Typically, these mollusks reek havoc with intake pipes and restrict the flow of water, making them a major concern.
"The common fear is that it's just a matter of time," Knaak said. "I'm thinking all of the lakes will be affected by them eventually. To my knowledge, there's no cure for them.
"We've been looking for them, and we'll keep looking for them. If we do find them, we won't keep it a deep, dark secret."
