More than 60 percent of Marion County voters who went to the polls Tuesday voted in favor of a 0.5 percent sales tax to pay for a new jail.

The current jail has served the county since 1933. County Commissioner Randy Dallke said he hopes 14 to 16 months from now the county will have another facility that will last 80 years to meet the county’s needs.

MHS senior Tristan Snelling and freshman Zach Robson have been chosen by Marion High School faculty and staff as Students of the Month for overall citizenship and classroom performance during the month of March.

An article by staff writer Rowena Plett tells of Chris Kerns’ collection of cups and saucers which includes many her late husband, Master Sergeant Larry Kerns, purchased for her during his more than 20 years serving five presidents as flight engineer on Air Force One.

Marion Hugh School students Vu Hoai Nguyen, Clark Kroupa, Elizabeth Goentzel, Aaron Molleker, Dylan Goebel, Erin Meierhoff, Spencer Fugitt, Ryan Nelson, and Issac Baldwin were inducted into Marion High School National Honor Society March 24 at ceremonies in Valley United Methodist Church.

Pictured is a football signed by Kansas State University head football coach Bill Snyder. The football has been donated to the Marion County Relay for Life auction as a fundraiser for cancer research.

Several restaurants in Marion County have new owners. Sandy Heyman opened the Red Brick Café in Burns in February, Mary Britton opened the Chuckwagon in Florence a few weeks ago, and Keith and Sherry Hess have purchased and operate the Wagon Wheel in Marion.

Junior center fielder Cole Lewman is the MHS Athlete of the Week.
