Volunteer Steve Smith is the new director of Marion County Emergency Medical Services. He fills a vacancy caused by the resignation July 28 of former director Larry Larsen.

Former Marion High School golfer and 2006 state champion Travis Hett claimed his first Marion Country Club open championship this past weekend after defeating champion Bryan Hess in a four-hole playoff.

The results are in. Blue-green algae is the likely cause of death of a dog that was tested after reportedly drinking water July 6 from Marion Reservoir. Drinking reservoir water could have caused the deaths of two other dogs that became ill that same weekend.

An afternoon that includes entertainment, an evening meal, and a fireworks display is planned for Sept. 2 at Marion County Park and Lake to benefit and show support for Marion County firefighters.
