For the first time in recent memory, Marion County had a request for a recount of ballots.

A recount of a recent Marion City Council primary race was conducted Tuesday afternoon

Five candidates were vying for two seats on the council, with the lowest vote getter being eliminated.

Previously reported results did not change. Incumbent Jerry Kline placed fifth behind incumbent Bill Holdeman and challenger Steven Smith, who eventually won in the general, and eventual unsuccessful challengers Gerald Henderson and Katherine DeFilippis.

Chase Bureman, grandson of Matt and Mary Kay Classen of Marion, recently attended the national Youth Leadership Forum on National Security in the nation’s capital.

Bailey’s Tavern placed first in the 47th annual Marion Bowling Association city tournament. Amanda Steward and Scott Steward won the doubles division. Mike Carroll was first in the singles division, and Amanda Steward took first in the all-events division.

A benefit soup supper and auction for Sergeant Ryan Newell and family will be Sunday at the Marion VFW Post, 420 W. Santa Fe St., Marion.

The 2007-08 Marion High School girls basketball season ended with the team receiving a Class 3A sub-state runner-up plaque. Team members were Chassidy Carlson, Danae Edwards, Kimber Hardey, Kayley Heerey, Lauren Helmer, Lindsay Hett, Bridget Lundy, Amanda Richmond, Kristen Steinborn, and Julia Zeiner.
