Marion County Commission chairman Leon Suderman resigned effective Monday. The resignation was received by mail Tuesday. Suderman, of rural Hillsboro, is reported to be seriously ill. He has served as commissioner since 1986.

Nearly 100 eager youngsters enjoyed Marion-Florence REC’s puppet and magic show Saturday at Marion Municipal Building. Mary Beth Bowers presented the puppet portion of the program and Mark Lucas, vocal instructor in the Marion school system, mystified the audience with a wide variety of magic tricks.

Marion City Librarian Janet Marler is pictured as she shows Southwestern Bell representative Harry Watts and Marion City facilitator Diane Hett how the library links to the Internet. Southwestern Bell gave the library a $2,500 grant to improve computer access at the library. Hett helped obtain the grant.

Steve Lueth is recognized this week in the series about people who grew up in this area and have gone on to achieve success in their chosen field.

Lueth grew up in the Lincolnville community where he played in the Cougar marching band and helped his father on the family farm.

Today he’s known as “music man” at Russell where he is instrumental music instructor for the school district and has received their “Person of the Year” award for 1996.

Chris McDonald of the Summit community between Peabody and Burns has announced that he has purchased the animal collection of Eugene Newfield. The cougars, lion, tigers, bobcats, lynxes, and wolf hybrids will be moved from Peabody to the McDonald animal farm within 45 days according to the Peabody Gazette-Bulletin.

Members of Marion High School’s Quiz Bowl team participated in an invitational tournament at Centre High School Saturday.
