Judging of speeches of local high school essay winners competing to determine who will win the two-week Veterans of Foreign Wars “Operation Goodwill” trip to Canada will be Friday in the high school auditorium.

Local students competing are Sarabel Wolf, Claire Hyde, Alice Ward, Carol Schlehuber, Jessie Jewett, Dale Hobein, John Newcomer, Carol Ginavin, and Pat Heerey.

Each will give a 10-minute talk. Judges are Erle Volkland, Edwin G. Westerhaus, and Dr. R.R. Melton.

Kansas highway K-15 in the south half of Marion County is due for completion as a black-topped highway in the near future according to the State Highway Commission.

Work on the new American Legion building, mostly volunteer, is progressing steadily. Van’s ladies and children’s ready-to-wear store and Marion Electric Shop will soon announce opening dates for their new locations.

General rainfall for four of the five days over last weekend put Marion County rivers and streams to bankful stage, however no serious damage was reported.

The theme “Belmont Acres” was carried out when the Junior Class of Marion High School hosted the Senior Class at the annual Junior-Senior Banquet.

Mrs. John Riddle, speaker of the evening entertained those present with a review of her visits to the South.

John Newcomer was toastmaster, Dennis Richards gave the welcome, and Robert Kline, the response. Special music was a piano solo by Alice Ward and two Southern selections by the junior class double mixed quartet.
