The district semi-pro baseball tournament, sanctioned by the National Baseball Congress and sponsored locally by the Marion Athletic Association, has gotten off to a good start with four games played to date and a good crowd on hand both evenings.

Members of the Marion post office force held a little party a week or so ago honoring one of their members, Miss Sadie Keller, who was retiring after completing 30 years as an important member of their group. At the time of her appointment, E.J. Buckley was postmaster and the office was located in the Masonic building.

Beginning with their July 1 pay checks approximately 105 county officers and employees will start paying Social Security deductions.

County amateur radio operators, “hams” they are called, will take part Sunday in a national Field Day, Stations licensed in the county at present are owned by Mac Kreuter, Harry Harris, Dick Jantz, Jay Pavey and Bill Griggs, Marion; Don Larsen, Peabody; John Moore, Hillsboro; Henry Bergen and Wilbur Ratzlaff, Goessel; and Charles Graham, Florence.

The 131st council of the Knights of Columbus in the state of Kansas was established in Pilsen June 10. The charter class included Father Joseph Goracy and 15 men of the community.

South of Town” community correspondent Mrs. Fred Meisinger writes: “There’s no place for a lazy person down on the farm. There’s replanting to be done, the crops growing need working, hay is to be put up, weeds persist in growing in gardens, and wheat harvest isn’t far off. Living isn’t so bad though — what with all the garden ‘sass,’ new potatoes, and chickens ready for frying.”
