Class, library collaborate on Earth Day

Earth Day is tomorrow, and 2021 is the “Year of the Sunflower.” In keeping with that, the Peabody High School horticulture class and Peabody Township Library are working together to provide children with a story-time video and a sunflower kit.
The video of Ginger Becker reading the book, “How a Seed Grows,” will be posted on social media tomorrow. Children in kindergarten through third grade can pick up activity kits at the library after school until 6 p.m.
Each kit will include a clear plastic cup, a bag of soil provided by the horticulture class, and a small packet of sunflower seeds to be planted in the cup and watered.
A booklet provided in the kit will give instructions and provide pages in which the children can draw pictures of their sunflowers as they grow — on days 3, 6, 9, and 12.
Then, the plants can be transplanted outside.
“Although Earth Day is Thursday, we are extending the activity another week for parents to pick up kits for their children,” children’s librarian Camilea Davidson said.
She said if older children through sixth grade want to participate, they also could pick up kits. Hours are Friday, 2-6 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. to noon; Tuesday, 9 a.m. to noon and 2 to 8 p.m.; and Wednesday, 2-6 p.m.
