Commissioners re-organize, plan projects

Staff writer

No changes were made Monday with Marion County Commission, despite swearing in three commissioners.

Kent Becker, David Crofoot, and Jonah Gehring all will repeat four-year terms.

David Mueller will remain commission chairman, and David Crofoot will be vice chairman.

Commissioners voted to send the city of Marion’s planning commission a request to use a former beauty salon building purchased for $160,000 last June as the new home for some county offices.

Commissioners originally planned to move the health department there. St. Luke Hospital wants to reclaim its rented space.

After commissioners learned that renovating for health department use would cost $693,700, the plan was changed to make the building home for road and bridge, emergency management, and planning and zoning departments.

Darin Neufeld of EBH engineering opened bids for work on Kanza Rd. along the east edge of Hillsboro. Bids will be reviewed to see whether everything desired is included.

Sheriff Jeff Soyez called for executive sessions to discuss personnel issues and potential litigation.

County engineer Brice Goebel discussed road surfacing and asked commissioners whether they would prefer roads to be microsurfaced at higher cost or chip-seal surfaced at lower cost.
