TO THE EDITOR

Distant praise

To the editor:

First, I’d like to thank you and your staff, past and present, for all the time and effort you’ve collectively put into producing the Marion County Record.

For the past three years, after your offices were raided by police, I like many others have purchased a subscription to show support for your paper and the important work you do.

I have enjoyed reading first-hand accounts of the raids and was heartened to see pursuit of truth and justice by the Record’s dogged efforts to bring all aspects of that tangled web of corruption to light.

I found myself drawn to the news from 150 years ago, often comparing it to a similar column in my local paper and realizing the differences occurring in different parts of the country. I also shared the column with my high
schooler, and it helped bring life to the history he was learning in school.

The writing style and voice found in the Record differs from what I’m used to in eastern newspapers, but my family spent a year visiting my mother’s relations in Kansas back around 1980, and the tone of the Record took me right back to that time and the way folks spoke. Somehow, it made the reporting in the Record seem more honest, more the voice of truth-tellers.

It has been a delight to see your reporters bringing to light that which others strove to keep hidden. The Record seems to be on good footing now, and Marion County will be well-served by the unswerving reporting you provide.

I wish you and the Record all the best and thank you for your continued dedication to good journalism.
