Farmer faces $75,000 lawsuit because driver hits his cow

A Fort Riley man who was driving without a license in August, 2020, is now suing a farmer whose cow he hit.
Adrian F. Ortega, then 44, was driving north on US-77 at 3:29 a.m. Aug. 14, 2020, when he hit a cow owned by Greg Bowers.
Ortega’s 2017 Ford Escape, heavily damaged on the front and right side, was towed from the scene.
No ambulance was called to the scene for Ortega, who did not report injury.
Ortega was cited for driving while his license was canceled, suspended, or revoked. Warrants were issued twice for Ortega after he failed to appear for court hearings.
Car accident law firm DeVaughn James, which advertises on television for its offices in Wichita and Topeka, filed suit on Ortega’s behalf May 18.
Although no ambulance was called to the accident, Ortega seeks more than $75,000 for injuries, economic damage, and pain, suffering, and mental anguish.
In other traffic offenses, Ortega was cited in Geary County in 2017 for not exhibiting a license and speeding; and in 2015 for not exhibiting a license, no insurance, and speeding and in Dickinson County in 2007 for failure to yield.
