A Marion gathering place for friends and new friends will open its doors from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 1.

The Turquoise Table, 626 E. Main St., plans a soft opening that day.

Created by Michelle and Merle Flaming, is a safe place to sip a cup of coffee, tea, or a soda, and enjoy a baked treat.

Inspired by Kristen Schell’s book, “The Turquoise Table,” the Flamings wanted to create a space of their own for people in Marion.

It’s a place where people can gather around a table for fellowship, building community, and healing during difficult times.

Right now is an especially difficult time because people are lonely because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Michelle Flaming said.

For her, it is a next phase of life after retiring from 31 years as a second-grade teacher.

Michelle Flaming said the location, in the middle of town and across from the park, is a perfect place to bring people together.

She pictures it being used by families, small groups, moms and kids after a day at the park, and church groups.

Bibles for people to read or take with them will be provided.

Prayer requests left there will be passed along to prayer groups.

If people want to rent The Turquoise Table for private gatherings, it will be available during hours it is not officially open.

“We can rent it out at a low cost of $50,” Flaming said. “We just ask that you leave it in the shape you found it.”

A rental agreement can be filled out and placed in the money box a week prior to the event.
