Regional competition will begin this week for county track and field teams.

Goessel

In action before regionals, Goessel’s girls captured the Wheat State League title, defeating Little River 156-151.

“As coaches, we had talked throughout the week to see where we could put kids to get any points that we could,” coach Curtis Guhr said. “The girls stepped up and were willing to run races they had not run all year. It was an exciting day.”

With two events left in the meet, Goessel trailed by 15 points, but the Bluebirds had three runners in the 3200 and Goessel picked up first, second and third to take a 9 point lead.

Although Little River won the last event, a 4x400 relay, Goessel placed third and prevailed as team champions.

Nivea Funk won the 100 dash and 100 hurdles and took second in high jump.

Delaney Duerksen won the 300 hurdles and was second in 100 hurdles and third in triple jump.

Athena Funk took first place in pole vault, setting a new school record at 8 feet 8 inches; second in the 100; and fifth in the 300 hurdles.

Rosie Gaeddert won the 3200 and was second in the 1600. Madelyn Olson was second in the 3200 and third in the 1600. Bella O’Neill took second in the 400 meter dash and fourth in javelin.

The Goessel boys finished fourth overall, “which was awesome as well,” Guhr said.

Eli Gaeddert led the Bluebirds, winning the 800 and 1600 meter run, breaking his own record in the 1600 with a time of 4:36.04. He also broke the meet record in the 800 with a time of 2:02.65.

Claudio Flores placed second place in the 110 hurdles, Aiden Impson was second in the 3200, and Ezekiel Guhr was fourth in the 300 hurdles.

Goessel will compete in a regional meet Friday at Lincoln.

Marion

Marion’s girls relay team broke a 26-year-old school record in the 800 relay in Bennington on Thursday.

Dylan Kraus, Hailey Harshman, Kaelynn Metro, and Maria Carlson placed third with a time of 10:16.44. The school record had been 10:20.60.

Caileigh Johnson won pole vault. Madisyn Hulett placed third in shot put. Jackson Howard was third in discus.

The Warriors will travel Friday to a Class 2A regional at Humboldt.

Hillsboro’s boys were sixth and girls were ninth at a Central Kansas League meet Thursday at Hillsboro.

Emily Gilkey placed third in the high jump and fourth in the 200.

Aaron Hein placed third in the 200 and fourth in the 100. The girls relay team placed second in the 800, and Riley Richert placed second in the pole vault.

The Trojans will travel to Inman this Friday for the Class 2A regionals.

Centre

Micah Stika placed second in the low 300 hurdles and third in the high 100 hurdles, and Jaycee Stika placed fourth in the 100 and sixth in the long jump at Centre’s league meet Thursday in Herington.

“Micah and Jaycee have been our leading scorers for the boys and girls,” coach Alan Stahlecker said. “Jaycee became the highest female scorer in a single season since I became the head coach in 2010.

“She has also set a new personal record in the 300 low hurdles in her last four meets, dropping her personal record by more than 2.5 second.”

Micah Carlson placed fourth in the 400 and fifth in the 200.

Colby Diepenbrock placed sixth in discus, and Kathrine Rziha placed sixth in the 400.

Centre will take a limited number of athletes to a regional this Thursday at Waverly.
