Staff writer

In the premier contest of the season, Goessel’s Scholars Bowl team placed fourth at the 2A Scholars Bowl state contest.

With a total of six teams eliminated and six teams advancing, Goessel started the championship round with a 70-30 win over Heritage Christian.

The Bluebirds lost a close contest with Wichita Independent 60-50, followed with a decisive 60-20 win over Northern Heights.

Sublette gained the lead after being tied 50-50, but captain Edel Miller tied the contest again with a correct answer. With one “year in review” question remaining. Sublette came up with the right answer to win 70-60.

A “must win” in the final match allowed the Bluebirds to finish in the top four teams. Goessel ended the successful day with a 70-40 win over Wabaunsee and a 3-2 record.

Heritage Christian finished first, Wichita Independent second, Sublette third and Goessel fourth.

This year’s team consisted of seniors Edel Miller, Nathan Impson and Chris Strecker; freshman Annalise Miller; and two German exchange students, Daniel Uhlig and Jan Wolters.

All team members came up with correct answers during the ten matches.

First year coach Braden Unruh and assistant coach Marcia Brubaker helped prepare the team for the season.

Goessel was the only team to beat state champion Heritage Christian, once in pool play and then in the championship round.
