Group plans to revise Grand Prix

A group of Florence volunteers interested in reviving a popular tradition from 50 years ago will meet at 7 p.m. Dec. 1 at American Legion Post 308.

In 1972, in honor of the city’s 100th anniversary, the first Grand Prix motorcycle race was held. Five more annual races followed.

The popular events drew 600 riders from all over the country and more than 10,000 spectators.

Flint Hills Bent Rims plans another Grand Prix in 2022 for Florence’s 150th anniversary.

The group is looking for volunteers to help with planning, putting on the event, and serving on committees.

Insurance will need to be purchased, a track will need to be planned, and money needs to be raised.

Information on how to donate money will be announced later.
