Kathy Lofflin

Kathleen Marie Ehrig-Lofflin, 67, of Kansas City, Missouri, died Friday, March 17, 2023.

Kathy was born April 30, 1955, in Hillsboro to Peter and Irma (Rychert) Ens.

She received her bachelor’s degree from Ottawa University in 1977, her master’s degree from University of Missouri-Kansas City in 1984, and her Ph.D. from UMKC in 1992.

For 32 years, she taught literacy education at Park University, where she served as department chair and in 2003 founded the Dorothy Harper Watson Literacy Center, which she directed for 11 years.

She was known for the care she gave students, careful research, subtle wit, and a grounding belief in the power of reading. She encouraged students to treat each child as an individual and to search for the best tool to help that specific child.

She is survived by her husband of 33 years, John B. Lofflin; children Heather Lofflin and Philip Lofflin; grandchildren Harper Comstock and Zac Comstock; sister-in-law Judith M. Lofflin; siblings Deborah Penner (and husband Paul) of Hillsboro, Myron Ens (and wife Terrie) of Galva, and Stan Ens (and wife Peni) of Hillsboro; and many extended family members, colleagues and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
