“In Memoriam” listings are expanded paid obituaries, phrased largely as the family requests, and may include enhanced information or photographs that might not fit within free death notices.

Kathy Winter

Services for Katherine Lynn Winter, 76, who passed away Monday Feb. 2, 2026, surrounded by family and friends, will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Peabody United Methodist Church.

Kathy was born Feb. 28, 1949, in Newton to Naomi (Pool) and Stanley Freeburne and lived most of her life in Peabody.

On July 25, 1970, in Ft. Collins, Colorado, Kathy married Harold Winter. Together they raised two sons, Jeffrey and Kendall.

After Harold re-enlisted in the Navy, they moved to San Diego, where he was stationed. In 1981, the family moved back to Peabody, where she remained until her death.

Kathy was an avid collector and always could be found at area auctions, garage sales, and estate sales.

She and best friend Marti McGaugh Foreman opened a small shop in Peabody in the early ’90s called Not Necessarily New, selling their collections. After closing the shop, Kathy continued her love of buying and selling treasures online and in area vintage stores up until the last few years.

Most recently, Kathy and sister Judy often could be found down south at a casino, spending their kids’ inheritance.

Family, friends, having fun, and being sassy were what fueled Kathy’s life, and that sass was there until the very end.

Early on, she enjoyed getting together with friends, card parties, Halloween costume parties, New Year’s Eve dances, trips around the country with Marti, raising her sons, and enjoying her nieces and nephews.

Once her grandchildren were born, they became her pride and joy. Kathy attended all their events and was so proud of them. She always would have a camera in hand and take pictures of everything they did.

Kathy is survived by sons Jeffrey Winter and Kendall Winter (and wife Stephanie); grandchildren Zachary Stephey, Mya Winter, and Adyson Winter; sister Judy Claassen; brother and sister-in-law Dale and Debra Winter; best friend of more than 70 years Marti McGaugh Foreman; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Kathy was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Winter; her parents; and brother-in-law Norm Claassen.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Peabody United Methodist Church Women in Faith, 403 N Sycamore St, Peabody KS 66866.
