Linguistic prison
To the editor:
State funerals, as we witnessed on television this past week, are always quite interesting.
Equally interesting is many television reporters’ lack of understanding of the English language, displayed not only last week but in state funeral coverage I’ve watched for other presidents as well.
Over and over again, the quite serious and supposedly learned reporters would say Jimmy Carter was on his way for internment in Georgia or would be interned in Georgia.
I found it puzzling why Jimmy Carter’s body was going to be incarcerated in Georgia. I was sure he was on his way for interment in Georgia or would be interred in Georgia.
Are we supposed to think these same reporters actually know what they are talking about when informing us of serious national and world issues?
