Longtime Hillsboro clerk retires

For Jan Meisinger, 42 years in Hillsboro’s city offices has been more than just a job.
“Working for city government has been a very fulfilling career,” she said. “Working with a number of long-time employees gives you a real sense of ‘family.’ I am proud to have been a part of seeing positive changes for our city over the years.”
She grew up in Clay County and moved to Hillsboro after she married. She retired Friday.
She has served as city clerk as well as secretary for the Hillsboro planning commission, board of zoning appeals, and public building commission since June 1979.
Appointed city clerk in 1982, she became a certified municipal clerk in 1989 and graduated Leadership Marion County in 1990.
Some of the largest projects with which she has been involved were the development of Hillsboro Heights, Hillsboro Recreation Commission, and Hillsboro’s sewer lagoons.
In retirement, she will be spending more time at Sew What Quilt Shop in Marion, where she is a co-owner.
“Quilting is sort of a dying tradition,” she said. “It’s time-consuming, but I love it.”
She also hopes to be able to spend more time with her family, including her husband, Edward Meisinger.
She wanted to thank Mayor Lou Thurston, former mayor Delores Dalke, former city administrator Larry Paine, and city administrator Matt Stiles for their leadership and guidance.
“I would also like to thank Glenda Stoppel and Mona Hein for our 30-plus years of working together. They made my job a lot easier,” she said.
Meisinger wishes the new city hall crew of Caren Funk, Danielle Bartel, and Racheal Plenert well as they move forward.
