Marion finishes 4-1 at Centre Invitational

Volleyball teams from all five of the county’s school districts played at area tournaments Saturday.

Marion and Centre competed at Centre’s invitational, Hilllsboro was on the road at Southeast of Saline, and Peabody-Burns and Goessel were at home.

The Centre Cougars played their first games of the season during their home tournament.

The Marion Warriors played Centre in the last game of the day and defeated the Cougars in two games.

Marion won the first game easily, 25-11, but nearly lost the second.

Centre shot out to a 17-9 lead and still had a one-point lead at 23-22, but the Warriors pulled out a 25-23 victory.

The Warriors tied for first place with Little River and Berean Academy. They defeated Little River but lost to Berean.

Berean beat Marion, but lost to Little River.

Centre finished 2-3 on the day, defeating Wichita Home School and Wichita Classical and losing to Little River, Berean, and Marion.

“I am super proud of the Lady Warriors,” Marion coach Kris Burkholder said. “They played their hearts out today, and they played some great volleyball. We beat Little River, who was undefeated coming into today’s tournament, and we only had one loss the entire day.”

Hillsboro

Hillsboro won three and lost two Saturday on the road at Southeast of Saline County.

The Trojans placed third, defeating Salina South, 2-0. Beloit 2-1, and Abilene, 2-0 Saturday but losing to Smoky Valley and Circle 2-0.

Coach Sandy Arnold said the victory against Salina South was a great start, but the Trojans made too many errors against Smoky Valley.

The Trojans fought from behind against Beloit and won after altering their defensive attack, she said.

“I was very proud of the girls for the way they bounced back after a very frustrating first game,” Arnold said.

Hillsboro eked out a third place finish by digging out of an 8-point deficit to win against Abilene.

“I was glad the girls could pull it together after a long and tiring tournament,” Arnold said.

Next up is a tournament Tuesday at Halstead.

Peabody-Burns

Peabody-Burns volleyball won two and lost two during a conference match Saturday at Solomon.

The Warriors fell behind Flint Hills Christian in the first set, losing 23-25, but pulled off 25-14 and 25-16 victories in the second and third sets.

Peabody-Burns beat Tescott, 25-21 in both sets.

The Warriors fell behind Solomon and Herington, losing 2-0 against both.

Peabody-Burns will face Herington, Centre, and Rural Visa at 4 p.m. Tuesday in Hope.

Goessel

Goessel won four matches at home but lost 2-0 to Sedgwick in the championship.

The Bluebirds jumped ahead of Wichita Independent in both sets.

The Bluebirds came out strong against Fairfield and Central Christian, netting 2-0 wins over both.

The Bluebirds aggressive serving helped them eke out a 2-1 win over rival Moundridge.

Both Sedgwick and Goessel were undefeated as they faced each other in the championship.

Bluebird passing was sporadic, and the Cardinals jumped ahead, 9-1, and never were threatened, winning 25-7.

In the second set, Goessel got as close as 11-13 before Sedgwick pounded its way to a victory.

Goessel will face Douglas at home Thursday.
