Marion girls score comeback victory

Staff writer

The Warriors came from behind to win Friday’s road non-conference game against Council Grove, 33-25.

“Both teams struggled to score early, but we were getting good shots and stuff at the basket, they just were not falling for us early,” coach Jason Hett said.

At halftime, the score was a low 15-10 in favor of Council Grove. The Warriors regrouped after halftime, scoring 23 points to Council Grove’s 10 points to take the victory.

“Our girls stepped up defensively in the second half, which created some offense for us and did not allow Council Grove to get anything easy,” Hett said.“We had a lot of our younger girls step up tonight and hit some big shots and knock down some big free throws for us,” he said.

The Warriors (5-9) will be hosts to the Sterling Black Bears (3-10) Friday.

Hillsboro’s perfect Friday

Trojan girls coach Micah Ratzlaff wasn’t about to take any chances selling the Minneapolis Lions short Friday night.

He and the Trojans had good reason to worry about the host Lions, especially considering they’d just knocked off Southeast of Saline, one of four teams with victories over Hillsboro. Trojan starters Savannah Shahan and Kingsley Ratzlaff also were on the shelf with illness.

Hillsboro wasted little time bolting out of the gate for a 15-2 first quarter and kept it going for a 48-34 victory, snapping a two-game slide.

“This was a really good win for our girls on the road,” Ratzlaff said. “Minneapolis has a very good team. We were down two starters due to illness, but the team came out and played with an edge from the start. We executed our game plan and defended at a high level all night. Good defense helps create better offense, and that happened for us.”

Zaylee Werth scored a game-high 18 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for a double-double. She also had five assists and five steals.

Kori Arnold added 11 points, and Anslee Brewer had 10 in a game, which saw the Trojans shoot 47% from the floor while holding the Lions to 30%.

The perfect Friday boosted the girls to 10-3 heading into a tough week capped Friday by playing host to Hesston.

Centre defeats undermanned Peabody

Centre fans were happy to see their girls team get a victory Friday against Peabody-Burns. The Warriors had just five players but kept the game close for two quarters. Mady Goessen scored 13 points for Peabody. The game was tied four times, including 19-19 at halftime.

The final score didn’t reflect how competitive the first half was. Centre pulled away in the second half due because of simple mistakes and turnovers by the Warriors, but the game would end up being the highest scoring match for Peabody-Burns on the season.

Fatigue left Peabody down to just four players by the middle of the third quarter, and Centre surged ahead by 20 points. By the end of the game, the Warriors were reduced to three players, and Centre won, 49-23. It was the Cougars’ second victory of the season.

Kaity Bina had her best game, scoring 12 points. Olivia Carlson also scored 12, and Hailey Barton had 11. All three are sophomores.

The Warriors (0-10) will hit the road Friday to face off against a tough Canton-Galva team (9-6).
