Tabor athlete faces drunken driving charge

Another Tabor College athlete was arrested Saturday on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Samuel J. Butler, 19, a freshman forward from Worchester, England, on last season’s Tabor soccer team, was arrested by Hillsboro officer John Huebert at 1:38 a.m. Saturday in a parking lot near the college’s tennis courts.

According to monitored police transmissions, Butler was driving a 2020 Toyota pickup with Texas license plates and was accompanied by another, unidentified person.

Butler was taken to county jail and released around noon after posting a $2,500 surety bond.

Drunken driving laws include lower tolerance for drivers younger than 21.

For older drivers, a blood-alcohol level of 0.08 is considered under the influence. For drivers 18 to 21, the level is 0.02.

Monitored transmissions indicate that a preliminary measure of Butler’s blood-alcohol level was 0.036 — the likely result of one or two drinks or beers for a person of his size.

Deputy Kaylan Miles was called to assist with the arrest.
